Trashion Fashion at Sonoma Community Center – Sonoma Sun

Posted on March 28, 2022 by Sonoma Valley Sun

After two years of virtual production of the local event, the Sonoma Community Center returns to host the Trashion Fashion Show live and in person Saturday, April 2 at Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall with a 2 p.m. matinee and 5 p.m. evening performance followed by a “Sweets and Bubbles Reception.”

Outrageous head-to-toe designs, made from recycled materials and found objects, will once again parade the runway by hand-crafted members of the local community who have taken up the challenge of turning trash into wearable art.

The show is just one of the few scheduled fundraising events that have become: Trashion Fashion Sonoma. “It’s a pleasure to invite the public to be a part of all the fantastic releases that stem from Trashion events,” commented Eric Jackson, Creative Programs Manager. “We do what we do best in creatively responding to our waste management challenges.”

Annual programming includes the ever-popular Barbie Gallery exhibit and silent auction, “BARBIE: Reclaimed and Reinvented.” This art exhibit at the Center, with entries submitted by the community, will feature Barbie dolls and friends rescued from landfills, thanks in part to Recology, and repurposed into new upcycled artwork. The Gallery 212 Opening Reception, scheduled for Thursday, March 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., will kick off the exhibit’s silent auction at which each handcrafted piece will be available for sale. The auction will end on Saturday, April 9. Barbie entry forms and submissions will be accepted through March 11 for anyone interested in transforming their very own Barbie.

Saturday April 9 will also mark the culmination of Trashion Week with a day of multiple free events at the Centre. The loved one Dogs on the catwalk, a Trashion parade for dog owners and their four-legged friends will take place on the center’s back patio from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Entries for Dogs on the Catwalk can be submitted until April 6 to meet the early bird registration deadline.

The Center will continue with an afternoon of free activities called “Trash Bash” from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., after the dog show. Attendees will have the rare opportunity to see all of the Trashion Runway Show outfits up close as well as meet and talk to the designers. Runway Show winners will be announced and awarded. And the Centre’s quarterly clothing and book exchange will be open to participants to exchange clothing and reading materials for new ones. Refreshments and creative activities will also be available.

And to complement the mindfulness efforts around waste management, Trash Bash attendees can visit Recology Sonoma Marin, who will be on hand to provide recycling information and answer questions. Additionally, Zero Waste Sonoma will collect e-waste for disposal and mattresses for recycling.

For tickets and information, visit or call (707) 938-462. All proceeds benefit the Centre’s educational programming.

The Trashion Fashion Show is sponsored and in partnership by Republic of Thrift, Christopher Mahurin, Rancho Maria Wines, Recology, Chateau Sonoma, COOKIE…take a bite!, Cafe La Haye, Whole Foods, Friedman’s Home Improvement, Sonoma Garbage Collectors, Picazo Cafe , Sonoma County, Sonoma Outdoor Foundation.
